Physiotherapy and deep tissue sports massage at Studio1

No doubt all of us that train hard at some stage experience muscle soreness, aches, pains or some kind of injury. When it comes to getting back on track a good physiotherapist and some deep tissue massage is often the best course of action. Speaking from experience the problem lies in finding firstly someone with the strength to manipulate the muscles of an active and often larger than normal athlete and also someone that understands what we do and the type of training we are involved with.

Deep Tissue Massage is the manual treatment of the deeper layers of muscle tissue. The work is slow, deep, and very specific - working either against or with the fibres of muscles, tendons or ligaments.

Among the many benefits of Deep Tissue Massage:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved mobility;
  • Increased range of motion (ROM);
  • Restored ease of movement
  • Reduced muscle hyper tonicity, tension and spasm
  • Reduced scar tissue and other fascial adhesions, which can improve both circulatory and nerve function .
  • Promote circulation (of both blood and lymph)
  • Reduce ischemia (by releasing hypertoned muscles and reducing facial adhesions, thereby improving circulation)

A classic deep tissue move is slowly running the point of the elbow down the length of the spine, next to the vertebrae. This releases both superficial and deeper muscles. Knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms are used during deep tissue massage.

Contrary to a widely held myth, deep tissue massage doesn't have to hurt to be effective. If you are specific, you can go deep. By using my anatomical knowledge and understanding of how muscles and tendons work, it can work effectively on very deep structures without causing pain.  Sometimes however, there may be some discomfort but typically you will notice improved mobility almost immediately, and any discomfort usually disappears within a day or two.

Studio1 has recently teamed up with Olympic level athlete and qualified Physio Emma Pallant in an effort to provide physio and sports massage either by way of home visit or on site at Studio1.
